About this museum

The library is the headquarters of the Christian Science Monitor and the Mary Baker Eddy archive, but the reason to visit is the Mapparium: a 30-foot-diameter stained-glass globe of the world (1935) you walk through on a bridge through its center. • MAPPARIUM 30-foot stained-glass globe, 1935 borders preserved

The full review

Most visitors come specifically for the Mapparium and stay for the rest. Built in 1935, the globe shows national borders as they were at that exact moment — Persia, the British Raj, the USSR — preserved unchanged. The acoustic effect on the bridge through the middle is genuinely strange: speak normally and you'll hear yourself echo back amplified, while a whisper from across the globe arrives clearly.
