Founded 1830 as the Boston Society of Natural History. Now a sprawling science museum on a peninsula in the Charles River, with a Theater of Electricity (regular live lightning demonstrations on a 6-million-volt Van de Graaff generator), an Omni IMAX dome, and the Charles Hayden Planetarium.
